Haulover Bay

East End

Off‑the‑Beaten‑Path Snorkeling for Experts

Why Visit Haulover Bay?

Located on St John’s remote east end, Haulover Bay is a prime destination for advanced snorkelers. The area consists of two coves - Haulover North and Haulover South - separated by the island’s narrow isthmus. Both bays offer pristine reefs, but the beaches are pebbly and can be tricky to access. There are no services, making Haulover one of the island’s most rugged and peaceful spots.

Haulover Bay Amenities & Services

Haulover Bay is intentionally undeveloped:

  • Parking: A small roadside parking area at the bottom of the hill holds just a few vehicles. Arrive early.

  • No Restrooms or Concessions: There are no bathrooms, food or drink vendors. Bring everything you need.

  • No Equipment Rentals: There are no snorkel, kayak or chair rentals; you must bring your own gear. Rent snorkel gear at St. John Beach Bum just off the ferry dock.

Snorkeling & Activities at Haulover Bay

Haulover is renowned for its underwater life. At Haulover North, snorkelers follow a short forest trail to a rocky beach and then swim to the western side of the bay, where vibrant coral reefs host schools of blue tang and other fish. The entry is rocky, and sea urchins are common; dive booties are recommended. Strong currents may occur on windy days, so check conditions and snorkel with a buddy.

Haulover South, across the road, offers calmer waters but still has a rocky shore. Both sides are best for experienced snorkelers rather than casual swimmers.

Getting to Haulover Bay

From Coral Bay, drive east on East End Road. Look for the “Leaving Virgin Islands National Park” sign; parking is just beyond it. For Haulover North, park on the left at the bottom of the hill and follow the trail through the woods. To reach Haulover South, cross the road and follow a short path to the beach.

Tips for Visiting Haulover Bay

  • Wear Sturdy Footwear: Dive booties help on the cobblestone beach and rocky entry.

  • Bring Your Own Gear: There are no rentals or amenities.

  • Check Currents: Avoid snorkeling when the sea is rough; conditions can change quickly.

  • Avoid Manchineel Trees: Poisonous manchineel trees grow near Haulover South; heed posted warnings.
