Description
The Great Sieben Trail is a historic track that links the L’Esperance Road with Fish Bay. About 0.9 mile long, it descends through a moist, shady forest where genip, mango and guava berry trees grow. This was once a colonial road connecting estates, so stone retaining walls still line the path and the grade is modest. Along the way you’ll pass the remains of the Seiban estate, including a sugar factory, rum still, estate house and cemetery. At one time the trail was famous for its baobab tree, but that tree was killed by pests in 2022; the massive trunk still lies alongside the path. Lower down, views open to Fish, Rendezvous, Hart and Chocolate Hole bays. The trail ends near residential Fish Bay, and most hikers arrange a shuttle or retrace their steps uphill through the forest. Because the route is not as heavily travelled as others, the path can be leaf‑covered and slippery after rain; hikers should wear closed‑toe shoes and carry water. You can access Great Sieben via the longer L’Esperance Trail, which makes a demanding 3-4‑hour hike, so plan accordingly.
