Description

This easy 0.8‑mile path hugs the coast of Leinster Bay, offering constant sea views and leading to some of the island’s best snorkeling. Beginning at the Annaberg parking area, the route follows a flat, rocky shoreline and passes the ruins of a Danish guardhouse and other small outbuildings. Waterlemon Cay, a small islet encircled by coral reef, appears closer with each step. Many hikers carry snorkeling gear and swim across the narrow channel to see starfish, sea turtles and colorful fish. At the far end of the trail, near a large tamarind tree, the Johnny Horn Trail climbs inland; hikers continuing on should expect a steep ascent. Those turning around can instead relax on the beach or explore the ruins of the Annaberg sugar mill. Because the trail follows the shoreline, there is little elevation change, but the sun can be intense midday. Early morning and late afternoon bring softer light and better chances of spotting pelicans and rays. The combination of history, scenery and snorkeling makes the Leinster Bay Trail one of St. John’s most rewarding short walks.
