Activity Details

The Reef Bay Hike takes you along one of St. John’s most iconic trails with a mix of nature and history. This guided hiking trip usually begins at the Reef Bay Trailhead on Centerline Road and follows a path through tropical forest, past old sugar plantation ruins and native petroglyphs carved by the Taino people, and down into the Reef Bay Valley.

Along the route you will see lush vegetation, shaded canopies, historic ruins, and sometimes a small waterfall or freshwater pool depending on recent rainfall. The guide will share stories about the island’s cultural history and natural environment while pointing out features that are easy to overlook on your own.

As you near the valley floor, the trail opens into Reef Bay, a tranquil beach setting at sea level. Some guided hikes include a boat pickup at Reef Bay to take you back to Cruz Bay when the hike is done, which saves you the strenuous climb back up. You may also get the chance to cool off with a swim or explore the beach area before departure.

This hike gives you a great cross section of what makes St. John special: forest paths, history in the ruins, petroglyph art, a sense of solitude in the valley, and ocean at the finish. It is a highlight for outdoor lovers and anyone who wants more than a beach walk during their visit.
