Hike‑In Seclusion Between Trunk & Hawksnest

Why Visit Denis Bay Beach?

Tucked between the famous beaches of Trunk Bay and Hawksnest, Denis Bay is a secluded oasis that appeals to travelers seeking “hidden beaches St John." Accessible only via a short hike from Peace Hill, this north‑shore beach offers powdery sand, unobstructed views of the British Virgin Islands and excellent snorkeling around Perkins Cay. Its off‑the‑beaten‑path location means you’ll often have the beach to yourself.

Denis Bay Amenities & Services

Denis Bay is part of Virgin Islands National Park and intentionally undeveloped:

  • No Restrooms or Concessions: There are no bathrooms, picnic tables, bars or rentals on the beach. Bring food, water and snorkel gear.

  • No Parking at the Beach: Park at the Peace Hill trailhead; the beach is accessed via a trail.

  • Hike Required: A moderate hike (about 10 minutes) leads from the trailhead to the sand.

Swimming, Snorkeling & Exploring at Denis Bay

Snorkeling is the highlight. Along the rocky outcroppings near the shore and around Perkins Cay, you’ll find colorful coral and abundant fish. On the right side of the beach, a collapsed pier and old estate ruins make for interesting exploration, but please stay outside fenced areas and respect private property. The north‑facing bay has gentle surf most of the year, making it safe for swimmers.

Getting to Denis Bay Beach

Drive 1.5 miles east of Cruz Bay on North Shore Road until you see the parking area for Peace Hill. From there, hike up the Peace Hill Trail; near the top, a path veers right toward Denis Bay. After winding through the woods, the trail emerges onto the beach.

Tips for Visiting Denis Bay

  • Pack Light: Carry water, snacks and snorkel gear in a backpack.

  • Respect Private Land: Stay on the beach and do not enter the ruins.

  • Bring Reef‑Safe Sunscreen: No shade or facilities are available.
