Highlights

  • Stroll along the north edge of Salt Pond, where salt was once harvested

  • Low, wind‑sculpted shrubs and hardy cacti thriving in salty conditions

  • Rock art sculptures created by visitors on the cobble beach

  • Dramatic waves on the rugged south‑facing shoreline – no swimming

Description

Drunk Bay is reached by a short path along the north side of Salt Pond Bay. The trail is only about 0.25–0.3 mile long and easy to follow. It skirts a shallow salt pond where shorebirds feed and thick stands of buttonwood line the shore. Visitors soon reach a rugged, wave‑pounded coastline of basalt boulders rather than sand. Swimming is not advised here because the waves and currents are strong. Instead, the area has become an informal outdoor gallery where hikers construct whimsical sculptures and figures from driftwood and coral. The barren landscape of sea grapes and cactus contrasts with the sheltered cove at Salt Pond Beach. Because there is little shade along the route, it can be hot; bring sun protection and water. Those who wish to snorkel or swim should stop at Salt Pond Bay before or after visiting Drunk Bay. The entire outing takes 20–30 minutes, making it an easy add‑on to a visit to the South Shore. Please leave the rock art intact so others can enjoy the quirky creativity of previous hikers.
