Description

Starting on the edge of Cruz Bay, the Caneel Hill Trail climbs roughly 700 feet to a wooden overlook with one of the island’s finest views. The round‑trip distance is about 2.4 miles and the path is often described as strenuous due to steep, rocky sections. It begins behind the Virgin Islands National Park Visitor Center and climbs steadily through dry forest where cacti and bay rum trees grow side by side. After crossing North Shore Road, the grade steepens; this portion was badly damaged by hurricanes but is recovering as new growth and flowers reappear. At the top, a sturdy wooden platform offers a 360‑degree panorama: Cruz Bay to the west, the cays off the north shore, St. Thomas on the horizon and, on clear days, St. Croix to the south. Because the trail is exposed in places, hikers should bring plenty of water and attempt the climb in the cooler hours of morning or late afternoon. Those seeking a longer workout can link the trail with the Tamarind Trail or the Water Catchments Trail, or descend the Caneel Hill Spur to Caneel Bay.
